Self-Study Great Person Bronze Statue

As this is an old item, it is unclear whether the person depicted is a real individual (perhaps Yukichi Fukuzawa?) or a symbolic representation. However, the meaning of 学自立独 (Gaku Ji Ritsu Doku) inscribed on the base is thought to be as follows:

Independence and Self-Study is a very powerful and sincere motto that expresses the attitude of learning and becoming independent through one's own initiative, without relying on others. The meaning and appeal of this phrase lie in its components: Independence means standing on one's own feet without relying on others. Self-Study means proactively learning without over-reliance on teachers or curricula. Combined, Independence and Self-Study expresses the determination to continue learning with initiative in order to stand on one's own strength.

There is an artist's mark, but I am unable to decipher it due to my limited knowledge.
